Camp Discovery

Began in 1974, Camp
Discovery is an American
Diabetes Association sponsored summer camp for children with diabetes. Located at the Rock
Springs 4H Center, southwest of Junction City,
Kansas, Camp Discovery
offers activities including arts and crafts, swimming, boating, fishing,
horseback riding, archery, and a variety of sports. While the emphasis is on having fun, the
children that attend Camp
Discovery develop close
friendships with other diabetic campers and counselors, and learn to become
more self-reliant. Educational programs
on diabetes are offered, so that each camper can learn the management
strategies necessary for proper and effective individual care. The camp has 24-hour medical staffing with
both doctors and nurses. Meals are
supervised and qualified staff monitors each camper’s diet. Week long sessions are held each summer for
diabetic children in the 3rd through 10th grades.
The River City Cosmopolitan Club has donated over $41,000 to help fund Camp Discovery. Our donations have helped to insure that no
eligible Kansas
child is refused for lack of funds. In
past years, River City Cosmopolitan Club members have also assisted with the
unloading of supplies at Camp
Discovery, in preparation
for their annual summer diabetes camps.
